AREAS OF STUDY:

Danijel Matijevic holds a doctorate in History and Jewish Studies from the University of Toronto. His dissertation, titled Ustašism as Ideology and Practice: Mass Violence and Entwined Genocides in Vukovar District, Croatia, 1939-1945, dissects the evolution of Ustašism—the ideology of the Ustaša movement—and the dynamics of multiple campaigns of genocide and mass violence in the context of Ustašist ideological dissemination in local communities, with the city of Vukovar as a microhistorical case-study. Dr. Matijevic has taught on multiple historical subjects—including history and memory of the Holocaust—at several post-secondary institutions, most recently McGill University (2014-2018) and the University of Toronto (2016-2021). He is Co-Founder and Vice-Director of University of Rijeka’s Center for Holocaust and Genocide Research in Southeast Europe. Currently, Dr. Matijevic is a postdoctoral fellow with Young Universities for the Future of Europe (YUFE) and Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) at the University of Rijeka and Maastricht University.
