Emil Kjerte holds a BA in History from the University of Copenhagen (Denmark) and an MA in Holocaust and Genocide Studies from Uppsala University (Sweden). In 2025, he obtained a PhD in the Holocaust History track at Clark University (USA), with a dissertation focusing on the guard personnel of Jasenovac, the main concentration camp complex in the Independent State of Croatia under the fascist Ustaša regime. Emil’s postdoctoral project widens the focus to the broader system of concentration camps in the Independent State of Croatia. In addition to Jasenovac, the project sheds light on relatively understudied camps where Jews were incarcerated and perished, including the camps at Jadovno and on Pag Island in the Croatian littoral, as well as the Đakovo camp for Jewish women and children.
