Dr. Laura Auketayeva is a contract researcher for the United States Holocaust Museum’s (USHMM) Encyclopedia of Camps and Ghettos. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in International Relations from Boston University, a Master’s degree from the State University of New York, and a PhD in History from American University. Dr. Auketayeva has also been a fellow at the USHMM, where she worked on her project about European Jewish refugees in the Soviet Union. She is currently working with LaNitra Berger on an upcoming book, Hired to Safety, which focuses on Jewish refugee professors who taught at historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) during the Holocaust. Dr. Auketayeva is a Fellow of the Association for Jewish Studies, Scholars of Color, where she mentors young scholars. Her work on Jewish refugee children in the Soviet interior will be published in Holocaust and Genocide Studies in Spring 2025.
